KTX and KTX - Sancheon Trains

South Korea boasts a well-developed high-speed railway system, offering comfortable and highly efficient means of travel between the country's capital and other major destinations in short periods.

There are two types of KTX trains, called KTX and KTX-Sancheon which both are operated by Korail. The first KTX was launched in 2004, with high-speed rail lines from Seoul to Busan. KTX-Sancheon began operation on 2010. Now KTX high-speed trains operate along 5 train lines.

It used to take more than 4 hours to reach Busan from Seoul. With advanced KTX trains, this time was reduced to 2 hours and 15 minutes.

The trains are pressure-sealed, which reduces passenger discomfort, especially during tunnel passages. Trains are made of quality materials and triple-glazed glass. The trains are not only fast, but also safe and environmentally friendly. ​

The high-speed KTX train travels at a speed of about 305 km/h, but can reach a maximum speed of 330 km/h. If traveling at a regular top speed, you can reach Busan from Seoul in less than 3 hours. There are 10 or 20 train cars forming the train set, and travelers can choose from two KTX classes.

  • IS KTX THE SAME AS SRT?

    No, they are different companies. SRT (Super Rapid Train) operates from Suseo Station at up to 305 km/h, with fares generally cheaper than KTX. Some routes, like Yeosu and Gangneung, are KTX-exclusive and cannot be served by SRT.

  • IS THERE A RAIL PASS FOR TOURISTS?

    Yes, the Korail (KR) Pass. It covers KTX, KTX-Sancheon, KTX-Eum, ITX-Saemaeul, ITX-Cheongchun, and Mugunghwa trains, but not SRT, the Seoul Metro, or the AREX airport railroad.

  • WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN KTX AND REGULAR TRAINS?

    ITX-Saemaul is a fast conventional intercity train, with conventional trains traveling at 120–150 km/h. Mugunghwa trains are the most common regular trains, stopping at almost every station and offering affordable long-distance travel. KTX is faster and pricier than both.

  • WHAT TRAIN MODELS RUN ON KTX?

    The original KTX model, launched in 2004, is sleek and powerful with slightly more spacious seats. KTX-Sancheon, introduced in 2010, is a newer, quieter, locally designed model. The newest generation, KTX Eum, entered service in 2021 and features a modern interior with enhanced comfort and wider legroom.

There is no restaurant car in KTX trains, as the trains are optimized for high capacity. But you can buy food and drinks on board from vending machines. On board, you will find clean interior, comfortable seats and large panoramic windows.

Both classes of the Korea Train Express offer spacious, comfortable seats, have onboard bathroom facilities, vending machines. The main difference between KTX and KTX-Sancheon is that the later has improved seats and installed power plugs in each train seat.

​WiFi is also available onboard KTX trains, for some classes it's free, for others it's for an extra charge.
